Heartache For Turkey As Last-Gasp Goal Sends Chile Into Girls' Football Final
Chile reached the final of the Youth Olympic Games girls' football with a cliffhanger 3-2 semifinal victory over Turkey at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday.
Turkey twice hit the post, through Hilal Baskol and Feride Serin, and had a goal disallowed for offside two minutes later in an exciting first half, but it was Chile who took the lead when a Francisco Armijo header flashed past goalkeeper Busra Ozturk in the 20th minute.
Chile doubled their lead six minutes later when Ozturk misjudged a cross and Melisa Rodriguez headed home into an empty net.
Freekick specialist Baskol pulled a goal back for Turkey three minutes before halftime to make it 2-1 and substitute Dilan Akarsu levelled the score at 2-2 with a close-range finish on 40 minutes.
In an thrilling second half, Turkey hit the post and crossbar, but with the match seemingly destined for a penalty shootout Chile defender Maria Navarrete scored the winner four minutes into injury time to spark wild celebrations.
Chile will meet either Equatorial Guinea or Iran in the final on Tuesday.
