Jamaica is hoping to continue its dominance on the track at the London Olympics in one of the most anticipated events Wednesday, the finals of the women's 200-meters, which features a lineup of the world's best sprinters.

Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown is seeking to become the first woman to win gold medals in the same individual track and field event in three straight Olympics.

In men's competition, the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt of Jamaica, takes part in the semifinals of the 200-meter race. He won gold in the 100-meter sprint in record time on Sunday.

Another much-anticipated gold medal event will be in women's beach volleyball, when two-time gold medalists Kerry Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor of the U.S. take on a younger American duo.

Meanwhile, Russia beat Lithuania in the first of four quarterfinal men's basketball games. The U.S. will take on Argentina in another quarterfinal matchup.

The star-studded U.S. team is undefeated but has displayed a mixed form, dominating Nigeria but barely getting past Lithuania.

Injured American player Dwayne Wade says the U.S. will win its second straight Olympic gold medal.

"A lot of people don't really understand this team," he said. "There's a lot of new guys that have been incorporated into this team ... and they're getting better and better with each game, whether it's an 83-point win or whether it's a close win. So, you know, I think that they're going to be at their best at the end, and I believe they're going to bring it home."

In other action Wednesday, Hungary won gold medals in the men's 1,000-meter kayak doubles and the women's 500-meter kayak fours.

In sailing, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen finished first in a men's event, giving Australia a second sailing gold at the London Games. Also, Switzerland's Steve Guerdat won the individual show jumping gold.

On the 12th day of the Olympics, China leads the medal count with 74, followed by the U.S. with 71. Britain and Russia are tied for third with 48.     fuente: La Voz de América, http://www.voanews.com/content/jamaica-hopes-to-continue-athletics-dominance-at-olympics/1475634.html
