Thousands Evacuated as Typhoon Hits China

A powerful typhoon hit southeast China on Saturday, forcing the evacuation of about 300,000 people.

China's meteorology center says Typhoon Soulik made landfall in the heavily populated Chinese coastal province of Fujian Saturday, with winds of about 120 kilometers per hour.

The typhoon had slowed since it made landfall on Taiwan's northeastern coast earlier in the day, killing one person and injuring at least 21 others.

Taiwanese emergency officials said a 50-year-old police officer was killed when he was hit by flying bricks.  Most of the people injured were hit by trees or flying debris driven by strong winds.

Recent torrential rains across large parts of China have left 200 people dead or missing.
