A Vatican conference in November on human trafficking. Modern slavery
A Vatican conference in November on human trafficking.
Modern slavery
“I believe that it would be good to resolve human trafficking and modern slavery. Organ and human trafficking can be addressed at the same time. Thank you very much”. This suggestion came from Pope Francis himself. These words were taken from a brief note in Spanish which the Pope sent to Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academies of Sciences and of the Social Sciences. Regarding this wish, these two academies and the World Federation of the Catholic Medical Associations have organized a conference on “Human trafficking: modern slavery. Destitution and the message of Jesus Christ” on 2-3 November in the Vatican. It will be the first meeting of its kind, the Bishop told our newspaper, and on the same theme a seminar in 2014 and a plenary session of both academies in 2015 will also follow. Confirming the Pope's attention to this phenomenon which he experienced first hand during his ministry in Buenos Aires, the Holy Father explained to the Bishop that he had the opportunity to meet and help various victims of trafficking, supporting them after they had reported their traffickers.
