The strength to overcome indifference
“In the humble sign of Bread and Wine, the Lord Jesus gives himself to us forever and thereby grants the strength to overcome indifference: let us unite in our work beginning with prayer, so that we can truly help and be ready to do whatever is possible to prevent future tragedies through which too often darkness descends upon the innocent and unprotected.” Like this, Cardinal Leonardi Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches, expressed his concern for victims in Lampedusa, especially those of the tragedy on 3 October. The Cardinal laid his prayer at the tomb of Apostle Peter in the Grotto of the Vatican Basilica, during Mass this morning, Wednesday 9 October, together with Bishops of the Marches. Present was also the French Ambassador to the Holy See and the Ethiopian Ambassador to Italy, the superiors and officials of the Congregation and the community of the Pontifical Ethiopian College that hosts Ethiopian and Eritrean priests in the Vatican while they are pursuing their studies in Rome.
