Deadly Ebola Virus Confirmed in Guinea

Health officials have detected the presence of the Ebola virus in Guinea, where an outbreak of hemorrhagic fever has left at least 34 people dead.

A Guinea health ministry official, Sakoba Keita, told VOA , Saturday, that three of 12 virus samples sent to France have been confirmed as Ebola.

Health officials have registered 48 cases of infections since the outbreak was first reported last month. They say there are also three suspected infections in the capital, Conakry.

The health ministry says World Health Organization officials are due to arrive on Sunday to conduct additional tests, on site.

Reuters news says health officials are also concerned that Guinea's hemorrhagic fever outbreak may have spread to neighboring Sierra Leone.

The WHO says Ebola is one of the most virulent diseases known.

It is transmitted by direct contact with the bodily fluids or tissues of infected people. The WHO says it can also be transmitted through contact with infected, sick or dead animals.
