Kerry in Jordan for Mideast Peace Talks
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met Jordan's King Abdullah on Friday for talks about a framework for a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians by the end of next month.
Kerry held two hours of talks with the monarch during an
unscheduled visit to Jordan's Red Sea resort of Aqaba after leaving Rome, where he attended a conference on Libya and held meetings on the crisis in Ukraine.
Kerry was accompanied on the flight from Italy by Jordanian
Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters. There was no immediate comment from Jordanian officials about the meeting.
Kerry hopes to announce a framework peace deal by the end of April, when the current round of negotiations is scheduled to end.
Very little information on the negotiations has been made available, but each side has publicly blamed the other for failing to make concessions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants his negotiating partner, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.
Abbas has refused, saying it would endanger the rights of Arab Israeli citizens and Palestinian refugees who wish to return to their former homes.
They must also agree on security agreements, borders, and the status of Jerusalem in a future Palestinian state.
If a deal were to be reached between Israel the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, it is not clear how this would affect the Gaza Strip, which is controlled by Hamas, which has rejected the talks.
