White House Hosts Science Fair
U.S. President Barack Obama is hosting the 2014 White House Science Fair to celebrate student winners of science, technology, engineering and math competitions from across the country.
The president said Tuesday he is amazed by the young scientists at the White House. They worked on projects ranging from a "concussion cushion" for helmets to lightweight sandbags that expand when wet to help people more easily prepare for flood disasters.
Obama announced his administration is preparing a new $35 million competition to train science and engineering graduates to become teachers. He also said his administration is putting a special emphasis this year on girls in science, engineering and math, which he called the "fields of the future."
The president noted fewer than three in 10 workers in these fields are women.
The president was joined at the event by the head of NASA, the director of the National Institutes of Health and science celebrities Bill Nye the Science Guy and Kari Byron from MythBusters.
