Obama: Millions Have Opportunity to Buy Affordable Health Insurance
U.S. President Barack Obama said in his weekly address that tens of millions of Americans would have the opportunity to buy "quality, affordable health insurance" on October 1 when The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, went into effect.
However, the president said the first of October was also the day a group of "far-right Republicans" in Congress might choose to shut down the government and potentially damage the U.S. economy "just because they don't like the law."
The president urged Congress to both pass a budget by Monday and raise the nation's debt ceiling by October 17 so that the economy could continue to grow.
Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers from Washington state, who delivered the Republican weekly address, said her party has come up with a plan to raise the debt ceiling that contained "cuts and real reforms" for a strong economy that included "fixing our outdated tax code" and "delaying the president's healthcare law."
