Hurricane Dora Strengthens Off Coast of Mexico

Hurricane Dora is close to becoming a powerful Category Five storm, as it moves in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico's southern coast.

At last report,1500 UTC, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said the storm was located about 390 kilometers southwest of Cabo Corrientos. It is traveling northwest at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour.

The center said the storm has winds of 250 kilometers an hour, almost making it a Category Five storm on the 1-5 scale of hurricane intensity.

The storm is expected to cause strong waves and heavy winds, but is not expected to make landfall.

It is expected to begin weakening later Thursday.

Dora is the fourth named storm of the Pacific hurricane season, which lasts roughly from May through November.
