China Air Defense Zone Hangs Over VP Biden’s Visit

BEIJING — U.S. Vice President Joe Biden travels to China next week as part of a regional tour that includes stops in South Korea and Japan. While the trip to Beijing was expected to focus on economic issues and other areas of cooperation, analysts say China's controversial new air defense zone in the East China Sea is likely to be a major topic. Senior U.S. administration officials say Biden will directly raise the issue of the newly established air defense zone and seek to lower tensions, but will not be delivering a formal diplomatic protest over Beijing’s decision. They say the trip will be an opportunity to speak directly with leaders in China about the decision, to voice Washington’s concerns and seek clarity about why Beijing made the move. Jonathan Pollack, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington D.C. says the development means less time to address other issues during the trip. He says the air defense zone will not only be discussed in Beijing, but in T

US Airlines to Comply With China Defense Zone

The United States has advised American commercial airlines to notify Beijing of flight plans over China's newly-declared air defense identification zone, although U.S. officials say the compliance does not indicate U.S. government acceptance of China's requirements. The Chinese Defense Ministry declared last week that all aircraft in the zone must identify themselves and obey Chinese orders. Japan, the United States and South Korea have refused to recognize the Chinese-declared air zone. All three have challenged the zone by sending in military aircraft. The United States, which is obligated by treaty to defend Japan and South Korea, sought to underscore its position by flying two B-52 bombers over the islands this week. China said Friday it had sent two fighter jets to monitor U.S. and Japanese aircraft that flew into its newly declared air defense zone over the East China Sea. China's official Xinhua news agency quoted Defense Ministry spokesman Shen Jinke Friday as say

8 Killed in Scotland Helicopter Crash

Rescuers in Scotland have confirmed that eight people are dead after a helicopter crashed into a crowded pub. Police in Glasgow say those killed include all three people on board the police helicopter when it crashed through the roof into the pub during a concert late Friday. Another 14 people remain in local hospitals with injuries from the crash. Witnesses said they believed some patrons may have been trapped inside the one-story building. There were no signs of fire, and witnesses said there was no explosion. The helicopter's rotor jutted from the rooftop after the crash. Authorities have identified those on board the aircraft as two police officers and a civilian pilot. British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted that his thoughts were with those affected by the crash. fuente: La Voz de América,  http://www.voanews.com/content/eight-8-killed-in-scotland-helicopter-crash/1800927.html
