US Economic Growth Speeding Up
The head of the U.S. central bank said the economy will expand somewhat faster this year than last year, with unemployment gradually decreasing.
Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen also told a key congressional committee Wednesday, that the economy is rebounding from the foul winter weather that sharply slowed U.S. economic expansion in the first three months of this year.
She said the economy has improved to the point where the Fed can continue gradually reducing efforts to stimulate growth with a large program of purchasing certain securities. Yellen said the Fed will continue its policy of keeping interest rates very low. She said inflation remains below the two percent rate that some experts think would be good for the economy.
The Fed chair also said the recovery could be hurt by geopolitical tensions or further problems in the U.S. housing market.
