New Appeal of Pope Francis for the safeguard of the fundamental rights of everY person involved in forced migration.
The cry of oppression
The trade in men, women and children is a vile activity for our societies which claim to be civilized
It is impossible to be indifferent to the cry of distress and oppression raised by millions of people, the victims of violence and abuse, who live far from their own country and from the love of their family. This is the appeal that Pope Francis addressed to the Church and to the international community, this morning, Friday, 24 May, at the Audience for those taking part in the Plenary Assembly of the Pontifical Assembly of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, whom he received in the Vatican's Clementine Hall.In particular the Pope asked the international community to respect and protect the fundamental rights that belong to every human person. All too often, in fact, “in a world in which a lot is said about rights,” he declared, “it seems the only thing that has any rights is money”. And we are therefore living “in a world where money commands”, and where “the fetishism of money holds sway”. A striking aspect of this reality is theone that the Holy Father does not hesitate to describe as“the scourge of trafficking in human beings, which ever more frequently concerns children”. The trade in people is “a vile activity, a disgrace to our societies which claim to be civilized!”.
