US Aircraft Carrier in South Korea for Drills

A U.S. naval strike group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz has arrived in South Korea for joint naval exercises that are very likely to bring a strong response from North Korea.

The Nimitz made a port call at the southeastern port city of Busan Saturday for a three-day stay to participate in joint military drills.

The U.S. Navy says the carrier's strike group, which arrived in the 7th Fleet's area of responsibility last week, includes guided missile destroyers and a guided missile cruiser.

According to a U.S. Navy news release, the group “will conduct exercises and port visits to enhance maritime partnerships and promote peace and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region along with its allies.”

North Korea calls annual joint exercises in the South rehearsals for an invasion, and routinely threatens massive retaliation if its sovereign territory is breached.
