El 4 de diciembre de 2013, en la sede central de ESO en Garching (Múnich, Alemania), se inauguró oficialmente la nueva ampliación del edificio de oficinas. A esta celebración asistieron miembros del Consejo de ESO, autoridades locales, los arquitectos Auer+Weber+Assoziierte, el contratista principal BAM Deutschland AG y el equipo de gestión de ESO.

La presentación de esta ampliación marca un importante día en la historia de ESO, ya que no solo reúne a todo el personal de ESO en Garching en un solo edificio, facilitando valiosas colaboraciones en el trabajo, sino que además proporcionará un edificio técnico para facilitar el ensamblaje, las pruebas y la puesta a punto de avanzados instrumentos. Esta ampliación ha sido posible, en parte, gracias a una generosa contribución del Ministerio Federal de Ciencia e Investigación de Alemania.
Estos dos edificios— uno de oficinas con 10.300 metros cuadrados y un edificio técnico de talleres de 2.900 metros cuadrados — y sus alrededores ocupan más del doble del espacio actual del que dispone la sede central de ESO en Garching. Este espacio adicional era muy necesario, ya que actualmente el personal de ESO está disperso, repartido en diferentes edificios del la zona del campus de Garching.
Además, con el E-ELT (European Extremely Large Telescope) en el horizonte, ESO necesitaba un núcleo desde el cual articular las innovaciones tecnológicas que requerirá el desarrollo de este ambicioso proyecto. El edificio técnico — que también alojará uno de los archivos de datos astronómicos más grandes del mundo — serán el punto principal de este trabajo.
Los dos edificios y el puente que los conecta a la sede actual fueron diseñados por los arquitectos Auer+Weber+Assoziierte después de que se presentaran varias propuestas como parte de un concurso. Esta firma también diseñó la Residencia del Observatorio Paranal de ESO en Chile, que recibió tanto el Premio LEAF en 2004 como el Premio Cityscape Architectural Review en 2005.
La ampliación ha sido diseñada para mantenerse en contacto con la antigua sede. El edificio de oficinas, que tiene la misma forma curva, hace un amplio uso de la luz natural y tiene dos patios interiores. El edificio técnico es un cilindro con un diámetro que casi alcanza el tamaño del espejo primario de 39 metros del E-ELT.
Ambos edificios nuevos han sido clasificados como edificios verdes, ya que su consumo energético será significativamente inferior a lo usual en edificios de este tamaño. Esto se debe a la fachada, bien aislada y protegida, y a que el control de temperatura del edificio de oficinas está centralizado — para lo cual se utiliza agua subterránea junto con una bomba de calor — y se suministra agua caliente geotermal con un sistema de calefacción por zonas.

Esta ampliación — cuya construcción comenzó en enero de 2012 — marca un importante paso adelante en la constante evolución de ESO.

El nuevo edificio de oficinas y reuniones de ESO en Garching, junto con el edificio técnico, tiene un área total de 13.200 metros cuadrados, lo cual supera el doble del área que ocupa actualmente la sede central de ESO. Los nuevos edificios, inaugurados el 4 de diciembre de 2013, reforzarán la presencia de ESO en el Campus de Investigación de Garching, permitiendo a la organización expandir aún más su contribución económica y científica en la región.
La nueva ampliación puede verse en el centro de la imagen, obtenida desde el tejado del actual edificio. Puede verse parte del nuevo edificio técnico a la izquierda y el puente que los conecta en primer plano.
