Major Snowstorm Hits US Northeast

The governors of the northeastern U.S. states of New York and New Jersey have declared states of emergency as a major winter storm bears down on the region after ravaging much of the north central part of the country.

It is the first major storm of 2014, bringing snowfall upward of 45 centimeters to parts of the state of Massachusetts and surrounding areas. Arctic temperatures and high winds were forecast for much of the area, including wind gusts of nearly 80 kilometers per hour in Boston.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency and ordered several major highways in the central Hudson Valley shut down from midnight to 5 a.m. local time Friday. Airports across the region canceled hundreds of flights.

Temperatures across a wide swath of the northeast were expected to plummet below minus 20 degrees Celsius and remain there for much of Friday. Burlington, Vermont braced for temperatures of minus 25, as did Montreal, Quebec to the north in Canada.

Meanwhile, the upper Midwest remained in a deep freeze, with temperatures as low as minus 41 degrees Celsius settling over the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Illinois, Iowa and Michigan.

Forecasters measured as much as 45 centimeters of snow on the ground in suburbs north of Chicago since New Year's Eve.
