Medicine Prize Kicks off Nobel Week
The 2013 Nobel Prize for medicine has been won by two Americans and one German who all work at U.S. universities.
The Americans - James Rothman and Randy Schekman - and Germany's Thomas Sudhof were jointly recognized for their research into how the cell organizes its transport system.
The winners of the prize were announced Monday in Stockholm.
Medicine is the first of the prestigious Nobel prizes awarded each year.
Rothman is the chairman of the department of cell biology at Yale.
Schekman is a professor in the department of molecular and cell biology at the University of California at Berkeley. He is also an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Sudhof is also an investigator at Howard Hughes and he is a professor of molecular and cellular physiology at Stanford.
Prizes for achievements in science, literature and peace were first awarded in 1901 in accordance with the will of dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel.
