More than 20,000 people went to Castel Gandolfo for Pope Francis. This vast crowd gathered there yesterday, Sunday 14 July, in the square facing the Papal Residence, for the Holy Father's first meeting with the community of the small town in the Alban Hills. The event was the Sunday Marian prayer. Having gone straight to the people's hearts with his “good morning” to the inhabitants “of this beautiful little town”, the Pontiff spoke to them of mercy, drawing inspiration from the Parable of the Good Samaritan and recalling the fourth centenary of the death of St Camillo de Lellis. He then emphasized that he would be in Rio de Janeiro for the World Youth Day in a few days' time, and called to mind the 70th anniversary of the Volhynia massacres. He had just received the personnel of the Pontifical Villas and the religious and civil authorities of Castel Gandolfo, asking them to be consistent and reminding them of the witness borne by his predecessors. After the prayer, Pope Francis visited the Monastery of the Poor Clares and lunched with the Jesuit community of the Vatican Observatory before returning to the Vatican.
